Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3831

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "So that you do not grieve over what has escaped you, nor exult over what He has given you" [Surah al-Hadid: 23], that he said: "There is no one who does not (naturally) feel grief or joy; but the real virtue belongs to the one who meets calamity with patience and makes joy a means of giving thanks to Allah."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The manuscripts available to us have the words "وجعل الحزن", whereas the word established from the margin of manuscripts (S) and ('A) is the correct and preferred one.

Grading: Its chain is "hasan" on account of Simak bin Harb.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): "Sufyan" in the chain is Sufyan al-Thawri.
Reference / Source: This narration is in "Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah" 13/ 373-374.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabari (27/ 235) and Imam al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (234 and 9314) recorded it by two routes from Sufyan al-Thawri with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: Imam al-Bayhaqi quoted al-Halimi as saying that "huzn" (grief) here means resentment and vexation (at the decree), and "farah" (joy) means boastful, arrogant exultation.
