Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is very da'if on account of 'Aqil al-Ja'di.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The name of 'Aqil's father is mentioned only in the author's (al-Hakim's) narration. Imam al-Bukhari and other hadith scholars declared 'Aqil "munkar al-hadith", and Imam al-Dhahabi also declared it defective (mu'all) for this reason in the "Talkhis". Imam Abu Hatim said in "'Ilal al-Hadith" (1977) that this hadith is munkar and does not resemble the narrations of Abu Ishaq, and that 'Aqil seems to be some Bedouin (a'rabi). However, there is no harm in the narrator named "al-Sa'q".
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani (al-Kabir: 10531), Abu Nu'aym (al-Hilyah: 4/ 177), al-Bayhaqi (Shu'ab al-Iman: 9065) and Ibn 'Abd al-Barr in "Jami' Bayan al-'Ilm" (1500) narrated it with the chain of 'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Mubarak al-'A'ishi. The second part of the hadith is not present in Ibn 'Abd al-Barr's narration.
Reference / Source: The following imams narrated this report in full and in parts by way of al-Sa'q bin Hazn: Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi (376), Ibn Abi Shaybah (Musnad: 321, Musannaf: 11/ 48), Ibn Abi 'Asim (al-Sunnah: 70), al-Marwazi (al-Sunnah: 54), al-Khara'iti (Makarim al-Akhlaq: 823), al-Shashi (Musnad: 772), al-'Uqayli (al-Du'afa': 1397), al-Tabarani (al-Awsat: 4479, al-Saghir: 624), Abu Nu'aym (al-Hilyah: 4/ 177), al-Tha'labi (Tafsir: 9/ 248), Abu Dharr al-Harawi (Fawa'id: 1), al-Bayhaqi (al-Sunan al-Kubra: 10/ 233, al-Madkhal: 840, Shu'ab al-Iman: 9064, 9065), Ibn 'Abd al-Barr (Bayan al-'Ilm: 1500, 1502, 1503, al-Tamhid: 17/ 430) and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi (al-Faqih wa al-Mutafaqqih: 746).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Abi 'Asim (71), al-Tabarani (al-Kabir: 10357), Ibn 'Adi (al-Kamil: 2/ 34), Ibn Bishran (Amali: 775), Ibn 'Abd al-Barr and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi narrated it by way of Bukayr bin Ma'ruf, from Muqatil bin Hayyan, from al-Qasim bin 'Abd al-Rahman, from his father, from his grandfather (Ibn Mas'ud).
Grading: Bukayr bin Ma'ruf has "lin" (softness, i.e. weakness), and he is alone in narrating it from Muqatil bin Hayyan with this chain, whereas what is "mahfuz" (preserved) in this hadith is that it is the narration of 'Aqil al-Ja'di.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying "The firmest handhold of faith is love for the sake of Allah and hatred for the sake of Allah", see the hadith of al-Bara' bin 'Azib in Musnad Ahmad 30/ (18524).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And for the saying "The best of people are those best in deeds, when they gain understanding of their religion", see the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) recorded in Musnad Ahmad 12/ (7496).
Note / Clarification: The phrase "azat al-muluk" means "it (they) stood up against the kings". In the language it is said "so-and-so is 'iza'' to so-and-so", i.e. he stands opposite him. This explanation was given by Ibn al-Athir in "al-Nihayah".
