حدثنا عبد الله بن محمد الصَّيدلاني، حدثنا عُبيد بن شَريك البزَّار، حدثنا سعيد بن أبي مريم، حدثنا موسى بن يعقوب، عن أبي حازم، أنَّ عامر بن عبد الله بن الزُّبير أخبره عن أبيه، أنَّ عبد الله بن مسعود أخبره قال: لم يكن بين إسلامِهم وبين أن نَزَلت هذه الآيةُ فعاتَبَهم الله إلَّا أربعُ سنين: ﴿وَلَا يَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ مِنْ قَبْلُ فَطَالَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْأَمَدُ﴾ إلى آخر الآية [الحديد: 16] (1).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that between the Companions' acceptance of Islam and the revelation of this verse, in which Allah Almighty admonished them, only a period of four years passed: "And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and the period became long for them" [Surah al-Hadid: 16].
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

(1) حديث صحيح، وهذا إسناد حسن في المتابعات والشواهد من أجل موسى بن يعقوب الزَّمْعي.
Grading: This hadith is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for this particular chain, it is "hasan" in the light of corroborating chains and supporting reports (mutaba'at and shawahid), the reason being its narrator Musa bin Ya'qub al-Zam'i.
وأخرجه البزار (1443)، والطحاوي في "مشكل الآثار" 3/ 194 - 195، والطبراني (9773) من طرق عن سعيد بن الحكم بن أبي مريم، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bazzar (1443), Imam al-Tahawi in "Mushkil al-Athar" 3/ 194-195 and Imam al-Tabarani (9773) narrated it through various routes from Sa'id bin al-Hakam bin Abi Maryam with this same chain.
وأخرجه ابن ماجه (4192)، وابن المقرئ في "معجمه" (885)، والبيهقي في "شعب الإيمان" (735) من طريق محمد بن إسماعيل بن أبي فديك، عن موسى بن يعقوب، به - وهو في رواية ابن أبي فديك عند ابن ماجه من حديث عبد الله بن الزبير لم يذكر فيه ابن مسعود، والمحفوظ فيه ابن الزبير عن ابن مسعود.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (4192), Ibn al-Muqri' in his "Mu'jam" (885) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (735) narrated it by way of Muhammad bin Isma'il bin Abi Fudayk from Musa bin Ya'qub.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narration of Ibn Abi Fudayk in Ibn Majah is from the hadith of 'Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr without mention of Ibn Mas'ud, but what is "mahfuz" (preserved, i.e. correct) is that this narration is Ibn al-Zubayr from Ibn Mas'ud.
وأخرجه مسلم (3027)، والنسائي (11504) من طريق عون بن عبد الله بن عتبة بن مسعود، عن أبيه، عن عمه عبد الله بن مسعود.
Reference / Source: Imam Muslim (3027) and Imam al-Nasa'i (11504) narrated it by way of 'Awn bin 'Abd Allah bin 'Utbah bin Mas'ud, from his father, from his paternal uncle 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud.
