Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3828

Bilal bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I saw Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) in the mosque of Bayt al-Maqdis, facing the east (or the wall), weeping and reciting this verse: "Then a wall will be placed between them, having a door, within which is mercy" [Surah al-Hadid: 13]. Then he said: "This is the place where the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) showed us Hell."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is da'if.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for its weakness is that Muhammad bin Maymun and his shaykh Bilal are majhul (unknown). Imam al-Dhahabi, objecting in the "Talkhis" to the author's (al-Hakim's) declaring it sahih, wrote: "Rather, it is munkar and its last part is false, because 'Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) is not established to have been together with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) there; and besides, who are this Ibn Maymun and his shaykh?" However, in the Nuskhah of Abu Mushir it is narrated by way of Sa'id from Ziyad bin Abi Sawdah that 'Ubadah was seen weeping on the wall of Bayt al-Maqdis, and he said: From here the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told us that he saw Hell. This "mursal" narration is better (ajwad) than the chain mentioned.
Reference / Source: This mursal narration is in the "Nuskhah of Abu Mushir" at number (16), and by way of Abu Mushir himself Imam al-Shashi narrated it in his "Musnad" (1312).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Mushir is 'Abd al-A'la bin Mushir al-Dimashqi.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (7464), al-Shashi (1311 and 1313) and al-Tabarani in "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (343) narrated it by two routes from Sa'id bin 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Tanukhi from Ziyad bin Abi Sawdah. This same narration will come with the author (al-Hakim) by a third route at number (9000).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All its narrators are thiqah except Ziyad bin Abi Sawdah, about whom Imam Abu Hatim al-Razi said in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" 3/ 534 and "al-Marasil" (216): "I do not think he heard anything from 'Ubadah bin al-Samit" (i.e. the chain is munqati').
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban also narrated it (7465) by way of al-Walid bin Muslim, from al-Awza'i, from Yahya bin Abi Kathir, from Abu Salamah bin 'Abd al-Rahman, that 'Ubadah bin al-Samit was seen weeping on the eastern wall of Bayt al-Maqdis; when he was asked, he said: From here the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us that he saw (the angel) Malik turning over the embers (of Hell) like huge clusters.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah, but this narration too is "mursal", because Abu Salamah did not meet 'Ubadah bin al-Samit.

Note / Clarification: In this connection see also the hadith coming later at number (8990), narrated by way of Sa'id bin 'Abd al-'Aziz, from 'Atiyyah bin Qays, from Abu al-'Awwam (the mu'adhdhin of Bayt al-Maqdis), from 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr.
