It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: In Makkah, before the emigration of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I saw the moon split into two pieces twice; one piece was over the mountain of Abu Qubays and the other over al-Suwayda'. The people said: The moon has been bewitched. Thereupon this verse was revealed: "The Hour has drawn near and the moon has split" [Surah al-Qamar: 1]. Allah Almighty says: Just as you saw the moon split, likewise the news I have given you about the nearness of the Hour is also true.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this wording; they only agreed upon the abridged narration of Abu Ma'mar from Abdullah. This is a hadith for which we need the corroborating narrations of the Companions supporting one another, in order to refute the heretics, because it is among the great miracles of the Shariah. So I searched and found, on this subject, narrations of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, Abdullah bin Amr and Jubayr bin Mut'im (may Allah be pleased with them) which the two Shaykhs did not record; they only recorded the hadith of Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).

11/ 345 - 346. Grading: From the side of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah this chain is "sahih". Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, Muhammad bin Muslim (al-Ta'ifi) is not very strong and used to make errors and mistakes. Here he erred by mentioning "twice" (marratayn) regarding the splitting of the moon. Apparently this wording is his own, since the other students of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah did not mention it (as will come). Several scholars have judged the word "twice" in the splitting of the moon to be a mistake. See "Fath al-Bari" (11/ 345-346). Note / Clarification: Ishaq is Ibn Rahawayh, Ibn Abi Najih is 'Abd Allah, and Abu Ma'mar is 'Abd Allah bin Sakhbarah. 2/ 257. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (2/ 265) by way of Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim. It is also in "Tafsir 'Abd al-Razzaq" (2/ 257). Reference / Source: Ahmad (6/ 3583) narrated it from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah alone, from Ibn Abi Najih, with the wording: "In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) the moon split into two pieces (shiqqatayn) until they looked at it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Bear witness." Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (3636, 4865), Muslim (2800) (43), al-Tirmidhi (3287) and al-Nasa'i (11489) narrated it through routes from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah. Reference / Source: Ahmad (7/ 4270 and 4360), al-Bukhari (3869, 3871 and 4864), Muslim (2800) (44 and 45), al-Tirmidhi (3285), al-Nasa'i (11488) and Ibn Hibban (6495) narrated it similarly by way of Ibrahim bin Yazid al-Nakha'i from Abu Ma'mar.
Note / Clarification: Rather, both of them (al-Bukhari and Muslim) also recorded the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas, as will come.
