It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) that he recited this saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, "And the stupor of death will come with the truth; that is what you were trying to avoid" [Surah Qaf: 19], and then said: The Mother of the Believers (Sayyidah Aishah) (may Allah be pleased with her) told me: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time of his death, and there was a cup of water beside him. He would put his hand into the cup, then wipe his blessed face with it, and make this supplication: 'Allahumma a'inni ala sakarat al-mawt' (O Allah, help me through the agonies (and pains) of death).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: This hadith is "sahih", but this chain is "da'if" because Musa bin Sarjis is majhul. Technical note / Defect ('illah): He contradicted the trustworthy jurist Abd al-Rahman bin al-Qasim bin Muhammad in the wording of the hadith (as will come). Muhammad bin Nu'aym is Ibn Abd Allah Abu Bakr al-Naysaburi; no criticism or praise of him was found. Qutaybah is Ibn Sa'id, and Ibn Muhammad is al-Qasim bin Muhammad bin Abi Bakr, and the Mother of the Believers A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) was his paternal aunt. Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (978) recorded it from Qutaybah with this same chain (without mentioning the recitation) and called it "gharib". Reference / Source: Ahmad, Ibn Majah (1623) and al-Nasa'i recorded it via various routes from al-Layth bin Sa'd. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Majah erred by putting "Yazid bin Abi Habib" in place of Yazid bin al-Had. Details of the narration: It will come at no. (4434) via Shu'ayb bin al-Layth and Abd Allah bin Abd al-Hakam, from al-Layth. Abd al-Rahman bin al-Qasim narrated it from his father, from A'ishah, in these words: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away between my chin and my throat, so after what I saw of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I never dislike the severity of death for anyone." Ahmad, al-Bukhari (4446) and al-Nasa'i recorded it via routes from al-Layth bin Sa'd, from Yazid bin al-Had, from Abd al-Rahman bin al-Qasim. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The mention of the agonies of death is also authentically established from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) through another route; in al-Bukhari (4449) it is narrated from Dhakwan, the client of A'ishah, from A'ishah, that there was a vessel of water in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him); he would put his hands in it and wipe his face with them, saying: "La ilaha illallah, indeed death has its agonies."
