Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3760

Khaythamah (may Allah have mercy on him) relates that a man recited Surah al-Fath before Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). When he reached this verse, "Like a crop that puts forth its shoot, then strengthens it, then it grows thick and stands straight upon its stalk, delighting the sowers, so that He may enrage the disbelievers through them" [Surah al-Fath: 29], Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "So that Allah Almighty may enrage the disbelievers through the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions." Then he said: "You are the crop whose harvest time has drawn near."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah but it is "mursal", because Khaythamah (Ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Ju'fi) did not hear anything from Abd Allah bin Mas'ud.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ishaq bin Ibrahim is Ibn Rahawayh, Jarir is Ibn Abd al-Hamid, and al-A'mash is Sulayman bin Mihran.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (9/ 5) recorded it through Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (15/ 153) recorded it from Abu Mu'awiyah and al-Tabari (26/ 113) via Abd al-Malik bin Ma'n, both from al-A'mash.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, Abu Mu'awiyah added "Talhah bin Musarrif" between al-A'mash and Khaythamah, which is a case of "an addition within connected chains" (al-mazid fi muttasil al-asanid), and Talhah is thiqah.
