Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3759

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning this saying of Allah Almighty, "And Allah made binding upon them the word of taqwa" [Surah al-Fath: 26], that he said: (What is meant by this word of taqwa is) "La ilaha illallahu wallahu akbar" (There is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain may possibly be "hasan" because of Abayah bin Rib'i. A group narrated from him, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" (5/ 281), and Abu Hatim al-Razi called him "a shaykh".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The addition "Wallahu akbar" in it is shadh; some narrators were alone in narrating it from Sufyan al-Thawri while the others did not mention it, and Sufyan was alone in transmitting it from Salamah bin Kuhayl.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Asma' wa al-Sifat" (197) through Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari recorded it in his "Tafsir" (26/ 104, 105) and in "al-Du'a" (1607), and al-Tha'labi in his "Tafsir" (9/ 63), via various routes from Sufyan with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Wahb recorded it in "al-Jami'" (1/ 344), Abd al-Razzaq in his "Tafsir" (2/ 229), and al-Tabari, al-Ramahurmuzi and al-Tabarani via Shu'bah, Qays bin al-Rabi' and Yahya bin Salamah bin Kuhayl, from Salamah bin Kuhayl, but none of them mentioned the words "Wallahu akbar".
Grading: This explanation is also narrated as marfu' to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from Ubayy bin Ka'b (Abd Allah bin Ahmad: 35/ 21255, al-Tirmidhi: 3265), but its chain is "da'if".
Grading: It is also narrated as the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (most probably it is mawquf on him) in Ibn Hibban (218) with a "sahih" chain.
