It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: On the occasion of the Treaty of Hudaybiyah we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) beneath the tree which Allah Almighty mentioned in the Qur'an. A branch of that tree was (bending) over the blessed back of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I kept it lifted (up) off his blessed back, while Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib and Suhayl bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) were sitting before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Write." Then the narrator mentioned those lines of the hadith concerning the mention of Suhayl bin Amr which are narrated in the two Sahihs (Bukhari and Muslim). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: While we were in that state, thirty armed young men suddenly came out before us and rushed at our faces (or suddenly fell upon us). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) invoked Allah against them, and Allah Almighty took away their sight. Then we went towards them and seized them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them: "Have you come under anyone's covenant?" or he said: "Has anyone given you a guarantee of safety?" They said: "(O Messenger of Allah,) by Allah, no." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) let them go, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "And it is He who withheld their hands from you and your hands from them in the valley of Makkah, after He had given you victory over them; and Allah is All-Seeing of what you do" [Surah al-Fath: 24].
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), since it is not unlikely that Thabit al-Bunani heard from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him), for the two Shaykhs agreed upon the narrations of Mu'awiyah bin Qurrah and Humayd bin Hilal from him, and Thabit is a more reliable narrator with a higher chain than both of them.

Grading: This hadith is "sahih" through Thabit from Anas. Hammad bin Salamah narrated it in this way from Thabit (as will come), and Hammad is the most reliable of all people in narrating from Thabit. There is no harm in Husayn bin Waqid, but he had some errors in narration, and perhaps this is one of them, although Abd Allah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal judged this narration of Husayn to be correct over the narration of Hammad. Reference / Source: Ahmad (27/ 16800) recorded it from Zayd bin al-Hubab and al-Nasa'i (11447) via Ali bin al-Husayn bin Waqid, both from al-Husayn bin Waqid, with this same chain. (4870). Reference / Source: Hammad bin Salamah also narrated it from Thabit, from Anas bin Malik, and it was recorded in separate parts by Ahmad, Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban.
