Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3736

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "or a trace of knowledge" [Surah al-Ahqaf: 4], that he said: "What is meant by it is (ancient) writing, or the drawing of lines."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it. However, it has also been narrated from Imam al-Thawri through a chain that is not reliable.

Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad (3/ 1992) via Yahya al-Qattan from Sufyan, and he transmitted from Sufyan that he was in doubt about its being mawquf, and said: "I know it only as from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)."
Note / Clarification: "Khatt" refers to the lines which some Arabs used to draw on the ground and use for divination (claiming knowledge of the unseen).
