Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3735

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the first thing Allah Almighty created was the Pen. He created it from a particular hija' (letters) before the Alif and the Lam, and it took the form of a pen of light. Then it was said to it: Begin (writing) on the Preserved Tablet. It said: O my Lord! What shall I write? He said: Whatever is to happen until the Day of Resurrection. Then, when Allah created the creation, He appointed over them guardian angels who preserve their deeds. Then, when the Resurrection was established and their deeds were presented before them, it was said: "This is Our record which speaks against you with the truth; indeed, We used to have transcribed whatever you used to do." [al-Jathiyah: 29] When the two records (the Preserved Tablet and the records of deeds) were compared, they were exactly the same. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Are you not Arabs? Can there be a copy (transcription) without an original book?
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain of narration, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: With this wording it is "da'if".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its defect is "discontinuity" (inqita') in the chain: al-Mu'tamir bin Sulayman did not hear it from Ata' bin al-Sa'ib; between the two of them is the intermediary "Ismah Abu Asim", as made clear in al-Dulabi (1233) and others. The wording in al-Dulabi is more precise. This Ismah (Ibn Abd Allah Abu Asim) is not strong, as al-Hafiz Abu Muhammad al-Ghassani said.
Reference / Source: The author's (al-Hakim's) narration was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in "al-Qada' wa al-Qadar" (277).
Note / Clarification: Miqsam is Ibn Bujrah Abu al-Qasim.
Note / Clarification: Its first part, about the pen being the first thing created (without mention of the letters), will come later at no. (3882) via Abu Zabyan from Ibn Abbas.
Reference / Source: It is narrated as marfu' via Sa'id bin Jubayr from Ibn Abbas: "The first thing Allah created was the pen, and He commanded it, and it wrote everything." It was narrated by Abu Ya'la (2329) and others, and its chain is "sahih".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the marfu' hadith of Ubadah bin al-Samit in Ahmad (37/ 22705), Abu Dawud (4700) and al-Tirmidhi (2155, 3319).
Grading: That hadith is "hasan"; al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan sahih".
Reference / Source: Something like its last part was narrated by Ibn Battah in "al-Ibanah" (3/ 339) via al-A'mash, from Abd al-Malik bin Maysarah, from Miqsam, from Ibn Abbas, in explanation of the verse ﴿إِنَّا كُنَّا نَسْتَنسِخُ...﴾ [Indeed, We were recording...]: "Are you not an Arab people? Can a copy (naskhah) be made except from an original book?"
Grading: This chain is "qawi" (strong).
Reference / Source: Al-A'mash also narrated it, in Ibn Battah as well, via Habib bin Abi Thabit, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah.
Note / Clarification: Ibn Kathir in his Tafsir (7/ 256) explained the meaning of Ibn Abbas's words as follows: the angels write down the deeds of the servants, then take them up to the heaven; there they are compared with the record of the angels in charge of the register of deeds (which is revealed to them from the Preserved Tablet every Night of Decree). This is what Allah wrote in eternity before creating the creation, so not a single letter is added to it or taken from it.
