Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3726

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has (in terms of His attributes) three garments: He has made might His lower garment, mercy His shirt, and grandeur (majesty) His cloak. So whoever seeks might through something other than that through which Allah has made him mighty, he is the one to whom it will be said (on the Day of Resurrection): 'Taste! Indeed, you were the (so-called) mighty and noble one.' [Surah al-Dukhan: 49] And whoever shows mercy to people, Allah Almighty will have mercy on him; he is the one who has put on the shirt that befits him. But whoever contends with Allah over His cloak (grandeur), which befits Him alone, then Allah Almighty says: It does not at all befit Me to admit into Paradise the one who contended with Me (in this attribute)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain of narration, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This report is "qawi" (strong), but it is Abu Hurayrah's narration from Ka'b al-Ahbar (that is, it is Ka'b's statement); it is not marfu' to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Reference / Source: Muhammad bin Bashshar Bundar narrated it in this way from Safwan bin Isa, as in al-Tabari "Tafsir" (25/ 134-135).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Bashshar is more reliable (asnad) and more established (aq'ad) in hadith than Bakkar bin Qutaybah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: But Bakkar was corroborated in raising it to marfu' by "Ahmad bin Abdah al-Dabbi", as narrated by Abu Mansur al-Daylami in "Musnad al-Firdaws" (with reference to: al-Ghara'ib al-Multaqatah, Ibn Hajar: 810) via Bakr bin Abd al-Wahhab al-Qazzaz.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This Bakr (al-Qazzaz), despite being thiqah, sometimes errs in hadith, as al-Sahmi transmitted from al-Daraqutni in "al-Su'alat" (210).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (7810) via Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with the same chain and text.
