Allah has apportioned your characters among you just as He has apportioned your provisions

حَدَّثَنَا أبو عبد الله محمد بن يعقوب، حَدَّثَنَا محمد بن عبد الوهاب، حَدَّثَنَا يعلى بن عُبيد، حَدَّثَنَا ابن إسحاق، عن الصَّبّاح بن محمد، عن مُرَّةَ، عن عبد الله: ﴿أَهُمْ يَقْسِمُونَ رَحْمَتَ رَبِّكَ نَحْنُ قَسَمْنَا بَيْنَهُم﴾ الآية [الزخرف: 32]، فقال عبد الله: سمعتُ رسول الله ﷺ يقول: "إنَّ الله قَسَمَ بينكم أخلاقَكم كما قَسَمَ بينكم أرزاقَكم، وإِنَّ الله يُغطي الدنيا مَن أحبَّ ومن لا يُحِبُّ، ولا يُعطي الدِّينَ إِلَّا من يحبُّ، فمن أعطاه الدِّينَ فقد أحبَّه" (2).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "Is it they who distribute the mercy of your Lord? It is We who have distributed among them" [Surah al-Zukhruf: 32], that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has distributed your characters among you just as He has distributed your provisions among you. And indeed, Allah Almighty gives the world both to those He loves and to those He does not love, but He gives the religion only to those He loves. So whoever Allah has given the wealth of the religion, Allah has loved him."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain of narration, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(2) صحيح موقوفًا كما سلف بيانه برقم (94)، وهذا إسناد ضعيف لضعف الصباح بن محمد: وهو ابن أبي حازم البجلي. ابن إسحاق: هو أبان بن إسحاق الأسدي الهمداني، ومُرَّة: هو ابن شراحيل، وعبد الله: هو ابن مسعود.
Grading: It is "sahih" as mawquf, as explained at no. (94). This particular chain is "da'if" because of the weakness of al-Sabbah bin Muhammad (Ibn Abi Hazim al-Bajali).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Ishaq is Aban bin Ishaq al-Asadi al-Hamdani, Murrah is Ibn Sharahil, and Abd Allah is Ibn Mas'ud.
وأخرجه أحمد 6/ (3672) عن محمد بن عبيد الطنافسي أخي يعلى، عن أبان بن إسحاق، بهذا الإسناد بأطول ممّا هنا.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Ahmad (6/ 3672) via Muhammad bin Ubayd al-Tanafisi (the brother of Ya'la), from Aban bin Ishaq, with this chain, longer than the text given here.
وسيأتي برقم (7488) من طريق إبراهيم بن إسحاق الزهري عن يعلى ومحمد ابني عبيد.
Note / Clarification: It will come later at no. (7488) via Ibrahim bin Ishaq al-Zuhri from Ya'la and Muhammad, the sons of Ubayd.
