أخبرنا أبو عَوْن محمد بن أحمد الجزّار بمكة، حَدَّثَنَا محمد بن علي بن زيد، حَدَّثَنَا سعيد بن منصور، حَدَّثَنَا أبو عَوَانة، عن أبي بِشْر، عن سعيد بن جُبير قال: قلت لابن عباس: ﴿وَجَعَلُوا الْمَلَائِكَةَ الَّذِينَ هُمْ عِبَادُ الرَّحْمَنِ﴾ [الزخرف: 19] أو (عندَ الرَّحمنِ)؟ فقال: عِبادُ الرَّحمن، قلت: هو في مُصحَفي: (عندَ الرَّحمنِ)! قال: فامحُها واكتُبْ: عِبادُ الرَّحمن (1).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) whether, in the verse "And they have made the angels, who are the servants of the Most Merciful" [al-Zukhruf: 19], it is 'ibad al-Rahman' (the servants of the Most Merciful) or ''inda al-Rahman' (with the Most Merciful). He replied: 'ibad al-Rahman'. I said: But in my copy of the Qur'an it is written ''inda al-Rahman'! He said: Erase it and write 'ibad al-Rahman'.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it.

(1) إسناده صحيح. أبو عوانة: هو وضاح اليشكري، وأبو بشر: هو جعفر بن أبي وحشية.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Awanah is Waddah al-Yashkuri, and Abu Bishr is Ja'far bin Abi Wahshiyyah.
وقراءة (عند الرَّحمن) بالنون قرأ بها من السبعة ابن كثير ونافع وابن عامر. انظر "السبعة في القراءات" لابن مجاهد ص 585.
Reference / Source: The reading "عند الرحمٰن" with the nun is the reading of Ibn Kathir, Nafi' and Ibn Amir among the Seven Readers. See Ibn Mujahid's "al-Sab'ah fi al-Qira'at" (p. 585).
