Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3707

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). Abu Zabyan says: We were reviewing the copies of the Qur'an with Alqamah, and he recited this verse: "Indeed, in that are signs for those who have certainty," and said that Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Certainty is the whole of faith." And he recited this verse: "Indeed, in that are signs for everyone who is patient and grateful" [Surah al-Shura: 33], and said that Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Patience is half of faith."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain of narration, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: These words are not part of the recitation (the text of the Qur'an). "إن في ذلك لآيات" occurs in several verses, but "للموقنين" is not there. "للموقنين" occurs in verse (20) of Surah al-Dhariyat: ﴿وَفِي الْأَرْضِ آيَاتٌ لِلْمُوقِنِينَ﴾ [And on the earth are signs for those with certainty].

Grading: Its chain is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ishaq is Ibn Rahawayh, Jarir is Ibn Abd al-Hamid, Abu Zabyan is Husayn bin Jundab al-Janbi, Alqamah is Ibn Qays al-Nakha'i, and Abd Allah is Ibn Mas'ud.
Reference / Source: It was narrated (without the recitation of the verse) by Waki' in "al-Zuhd" (203), Abd Allah bin Ahmad in "al-Sunnah" (817), al-Khallal in "al-Sunnah" (1509), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (8544) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (47 and 9266) through various routes via al-A'mash, with this chain, from Abd Allah bin Mas'ud, who said: "Patience is half of faith, and certainty is the whole of faith."
Important point: Imam al-Bukhari mentioned its second half from Ibn Mas'ud without a chain (mu'allaq) in his Sahih at the beginning of the Book of Faith.
Grading: This narration has also been narrated as marfu', but it is not sahih.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn al-A'rabi (592), Ibn Shahin (270), Tammam al-Razi (1083), al-Lalaka'i (1682), Abu Nu'aym (5/ 34), al-Quda'i (158), al-Bayhaqi (9265), al-Khatib (15/ 302), Qiwam al-Sunnah (1609), Ibn al-Jawzi (1364) and Ibn Hajar (2/ 22-23) via Ya'qub bin Humayd bin Kasib, from Muhammad bin Khalid al-Makhzumi, from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Zubayd al-Yami, from Abu Wa'il, from Ibn Mas'ud, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Grading: This chain is not established, as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Khalid al-Makhzumi is alone in it, and he is majhul; only Ya'qub bin Kasib narrated from him. Ibn Hibban said in "al-Thiqat" (9/ 59) that he sometimes raised mawquf reports to marfu', and Ibn al-Jawzi called him majruh (criticised). Also, Ya'qub bin Humayd bin Kasib is weak when alone. Al-Hafiz Abu Ali al-Naysaburi said: This hadith is munkar; it has no basis in the hadith of Zubayd or the hadith of al-Thawri.
