It is narrated from Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) that some of his companions came to him while he was afflicted with a bodily illness, and one of them said: "It grieves us greatly to see you in this condition." At this he said: "Do not be saddened by what you see, for this condition is because of a sin, and what Allah pardons is far more than this." Then Imran (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: "And whatever misfortune befalls you is because of what your own hands have earned, and He pardons much." [Surah al-Shura: 30]
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain of narration, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The speaker here is al-Hasan, meaning al-Hasan al-Basri.
Grading: All its narrators are thiqah. Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement over whether al-Hasan al-Basri heard from Imran bin Husayn; the majority hold that he did not hear from him, but the author (al-Hakim) expressed certainty in several places in his book that he did. Ya'qub bin Ibrahim is al-Dawraqi al-Hafiz. Reference / Source: It was narrated in the same way by Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-Marad wa al-Kaffarat" (249), and via him by al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (9356), via Fudayl bin Abd al-Wahhab from Hushaym, with this chain. Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-Rida 'an Allah bi-Qada'ih" (61) via Yunus bin Ubayd, and by al-Bayhaqi in "al-Shu'ab" (9500) via al-Mubarak bin Fadalah, both from al-Hasan. Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, al-Mubarak transmitted these words from al-Hasan in his narration: "We entered upon Imran". Al-Mubarak is not a strong narrator and was well known for tadlis, and Imam Ahmad mentioned that, alone among the students of al-Hasan, he would use expressions of hearing and narration.
