It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Today everyone in Kufah is well-off; even the lowest in rank among them drinks the water of the Euphrates, sits in the shade and eats bread of wheat. Yet this verse, 'And if Allah were to extend provision for His servants, they would rebel on the earth; but He sends down in due measure whatever He wills' [Surah al-Shura: 27], was revealed concerning the People of the Suffah, because they had said, wishing for the world: If only we had (wealth and goods)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain of narration, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: This hadith is "da'if", even though its chain appears sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Kurayb (Muhammad bin al-Ala' al-Hamdani) took the well-trodden path (jaddah) in it and narrated it from Abu Mu'awiyah (Muhammad bin Khazim al-Darir), from al-A'mash, whereas three eminent thiqah narrators contradicted him. Those three are Ibn Abi Shaybah "al-Musannaf" (13/ 285), Imam Ahmad "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (883) and Hannad bin al-Sari "al-Zuhd" (699), who narrated it from Abu Mu'awiyah, from Layth bin Abi Sulaym, from Mujahid, from Ibn Sakhbarah, from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Since Layth's memory was poor, he is weak when alone. Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (9848) via Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with the same chain and text.
