It is narrated from the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that she said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to fast (voluntary fasts) so much that we would say he would not stop fasting now, and when he stopped fasting we would say he would not fast now. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite Surah Bani Isra'il and Surah al-Zumar every night.

Grading: The hadith is "sahih" except for the statement: "And he used to recite Surah Bani Isra'il and al-Zumar every night". Technical note / Defect ('illah): "Abu Lubabah" (Marwan, the freedman of A'ishah) is alone in narrating it, and only one narrator narrated from him. Ibn Ma'in, al-Dhahabi (al-Kashif) and Ibn Hajar (al-Taqrib) declared him thiqah, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in al-Thiqat, and al-Tirmidhi graded this hadith hasan. But al-Dhahabi stated explicitly in "al-Mizan" (4/ 565) that his report is "munkar". Ibn Khuzaymah withheld judgement at (1163) and said: if it is permissible to use the report of this Abu Lubabah as proof (for I know neither his uprightness nor any criticism of him). Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad, al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa'i through several routes via Hammad bin Zayd. al-Tirmidhi limited himself to the story of the recitation and called it "hasan gharib". Reference / Source: The story of fasting and breaking the fast was recorded by Ahmad, al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban via "Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman", and by Ahmad, Muslim and al-Nasa'i via "Abd Allah bin Shaqiq al-Uqayli"; both from A'ishah.
