Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3665

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "And We placed upon his throne a body" [Surah Sad: 34], that he said: What is meant by it is the devil who sat on his throne for forty days, judging between people. Sayyiduna Sulayman (peace be upon him) had a slave-girl named "Jaradah". There was a dispute between some of her family and his people. Sayyiduna Sulayman (peace be upon him) did judge between them with the truth, but a wish arose in his heart that the right would turn out to be on the side of her family. Then Allah Almighty revealed to him that he would soon be afflicted with a trial, and he did not know whether this trial would come from the heavens or from the earth.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih", and this report is from the "Isra'iliyyat" that some Companions and Tabi'in took from the People of the Book.
Note / Clarification: Sufyan is al-Thawri.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Muhammad bin Khalaf in "Akhbar al-Qudat" (1/ 29) via Muhammad bin Yusuf al-Firyabi, from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this chain.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Nasa'i (10926) via Abu Mu'awiyah al-Darir, from al-A'mash; it is longer than here and contains "munkar wordings" as well.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir, after quoting the long narration in his Tafsir via Abu Mu'awiyah from al-A'mash, said: Its chain up to Ibn Abbas is "qawi" (strong), but it appears that Ibn Abbas (if it is authentically from him) took it from the People of the Book. Among the People of the Book is a group that does not believe in the prophethood of Sulayman (peace be upon him), so evidently they lie about him. That is why its narrative contains "objectionable things" (munkarat), the most severe of which is the mention of "the women".
