Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3663

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him) used to make this supplication: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuka, wal-'amalal-ladhi yuballighuni hubbaka, Allahummaj'al hubbaka ahabba ilayya min nafsi wa ahli wa minal-ma'il-barid' (O Allah, I ask You for Your love, the love of those who love You, and the deeds that will bring me to Your love. O my Lord, make Your love dearer to me than my own self, my family and cold water)." And whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him) or related something about him, he would say: "He was the most devoted in worship of all human beings."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Note / Clarification: Manuscripts (Z, S, 'A) have "Sa'id"; what is recorded from manuscript (B) is "correct" (sawab), agreeing with the sources.

Grading: This chain is "da'if" (weak) because of the unknown status (jahalah) of "Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Dimashqi" (Ibn Yazid bin Rabi'ah).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): al-Dhahabi made a "mistake" in "al-Talkhis": he took him to be "Abd Allah bin Yazid bin Adam" and quoted the statement of Imam Ahmad (that his hadiths are fabricated).
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tirmidhi (3490) from Abu Kurayb, from Muhammad bin Fudayl, with this chain.
Grading: He said: This hadith is "hasan gharib".
Grading: The statement at its end about Dawud (peace be upon him), "He was the greatest worshipper among humankind", is "sahih li-ghayrihi". A supporting report for it is the hadith of Abd Allah bin Amr (Muslim 1159), which says: "Fast the fast of Dawud, for he was the greatest worshipper among people."
