أخبرنا إسماعيل بن محمد الفقيه بالرَّيّ، حدثنا أبو حاتم محمد بن إدريس، أخبرنا سليمان بن داود الهاشمي، حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن أبي الزِّناد، عن موسى بن عُقْبة، عن كُرَيب، عن ابن عبَّاس قال: ما أصاب داودَ ما أصابه بعدَ القَدَر إلَّا من عُجْبٍ عَجِبَ به من نفسِه، وذلك أنه قال: يا ربِّ ما من ساعةٍ من ليلٍ ولا نهارٍ إلَّا وعابدٌ من آلِ داود يعبدُك، يصلِّي لك، أو يسبِّحُ أو يكبِّر، وذكر أشياءَ، فكره اللهُ ذلك فقال: يا داود، إنَّ ذلك لم يكن إلَّا بي، فلولا عَوْني ما قَوِيتَ عليه، وجَلَالي لأَكِلنَّكَ إلى نفسِك يومًا، قال: يا ربِّ، فأخبِرْني به، فأصابته الفتنةُ ذلك اليومَ (1).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: Whatever trial befell Sayyiduna Dawud (peace be upon him) after the decree was only because of something about himself that pleased him. That was that he said: O my Lord, there is no hour of the night or day in which someone of the family of Dawud is not worshipping You, praying to You, or glorifying You or proclaiming Your greatness; and he mentioned several other things. Allah Almighty disliked this and said: O Dawud, all of this is only by My enabling; had it not been for My help, you would not have had the strength for it. By My might and majesty, I shall surely leave you to yourself for one day. He said: O Lord, then tell me about that day. And on that very day he fell into the trial.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1) إسناده حسن من أجل عبد الرحمن بن أبي الزناد. وظاهر هذا الخبر أنه من الإسرائيليات.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" because of "Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad". Outwardly this report appears to be from the "Isra'iliyyat".
وأخرجه البيهقي في "شعب الإيمان" (6866) عن أبي عبد الله الحاكم، بهذا الإسناد.
