Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3650

It is narrated from Abu Wa'il Shaqiq bin Salamah that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse thus: "Bal 'ajibtu wa yaskharun" (Rather, I wondered, while they mock) [Surah al-Saffat: 12]. Upon this, Qadi Shurayh said: Allah Almighty does not wonder at anything; only one who does not know wonders. Imam al-A'mash said: I mentioned this to Ibrahim (al-Nakha'i), and he said: Shurayh was very pleased with his own opinion. Certainly Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was more learned than Shurayh, and he used to recite it as "Bal 'ajibtu" (Rather, I wondered).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.
