Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3631

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: When we narrate a hadith to you, we also present its confirmation from the Book of Allah. Indeed, when a servant says: 'Subhan Allah, wal-hamdu lillah, wa la ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar, wa tabarak Allah' (Glory be to Allah, all praise is for Allah, there is no god but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, and blessed is Allah), an angel takes hold of these words, gathers them beneath his wings and flies upward with them. Whatever gathering of angels he passes by, those angels seek forgiveness for the one who said these words, until through these words access is gained to the presence of the Most Merciful. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: "To Him ascend the good words, and righteous deeds raise them." [Fatir: 10]
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The printed edition has "yaji'u", while what we have adopted is from our manuscripts. The hafiz al-Mundhiri says in "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib", after citing it from al-Hakim: So it is in my copy: "yuhayya", with an undotted ha' and a doubled ya'. Al-Tabarani narrated it as "hatta yaji'a", with jim, and perhaps that is correct.

Grading: Its chain can possibly be considered hasan because of "Abd Allah bin al-Mukhariq" and "his father"; Ibn Hibban mentioned them in "al-Thiqat", and there is disagreement over whether Mukhariq was a Companion.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (616) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Musaddad recorded it in his "Musnad" (as in "al-Matalib al-Aliyah" 3406) from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan; al-Tabari (22/ 120) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Asma' wa al-Sifat" (667) via Ja'far bin Awn; and al-Tabarani (9144) via Abu Nu'aym; all three from al-Mas'udi, with this same chain. Yahya al-Qattan is among those who heard from al-Mas'udi before his memory deteriorated (ikhtilat).
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani recorded something similar (but without mention of the verse) in "al-Hilyah" (4/ 268) via al-Layth bin Sa'd, from Ibn Ajlan, from Awn bin Abd Allah bin Utbah, from his father, from Ibn Mas'ud.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Abi Hatim al-Razi asked his father about this hadith of Ibn Ajlan, as in "al-Ilal" (2033), and mentioned that al-Mas'udi also narrated it as "from Awn, from al-Aswad bin Yazid, from Ibn Mas'ud". He asked his father Abu Hatim: Which of the two is more correct? He said: Al-Mas'udi understands the hadith of Awn better, and his version is more likely. We say: We have not found this route that Ibn Abi Hatim pointed to anywhere else.
