It is narrated from Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) that I came looking for Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), but he was not at home. Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "He has gone to call the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); please sit down." Then he came with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and they entered the house, and I also entered with them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) and seated each of them on one of his thighs, then he drew Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) and her husband (Ali, may Allah be pleased with him) close to himself, and spread his cloak over all of them, while I was witnessing all this. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "Allah only intends to remove impurity from you, O people of the household, and to purify you with a thorough purification," and said: "O Allah, these are my household; O Allah, these family members of mine are more deserving."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is sahih. Note / Clarification: Abu Ammar is Shaddad bin Abd Allah, the freedman (mawla) of Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan. Reference / Source: Ahmad (28/ 16988) and Ibn Hibban (6976) recorded it via several routes from al-Awza'i, with this same chain. At the end of some narrations (such as Ibn Hibban's) there is: Wathilah said: I said from the side of the house: "And am I, O Messenger of Allah, of your family?" He said: "And you are of my family." Wathilah said: It is among the greatest of my hopes. (4757). Note / Clarification: The hadith will come in the author's work at number (4757). Note / Clarification: Al-Sindi says in his marginal notes on the "Musnad": His words "and my Ahl al-Bayt are more deserving" mean: more deserving of this honour, which is the removal of impurity and purification.
