Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is sahih, and the narrators of this chain are acceptable (la ba'sa bihim), but Abd al-Rahman bin Abd Allah bin Dinar has some softness (lin).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): A narrator more reliable than him differed from him and narrated the hadith as mursal, and that is the preserved (mahfuz) version. However, this hadith is narrated from Umm Salamah through several routes, some of which are sahih.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Kabir" (23/ 627) from Idris bin Ja'far al-Attar, and Abu Nu'aym in "Tarikh Asbahan" (2/ 253) via Muhammad bin Harun al-Razi, both from Uthman bin Umar, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ali bin Hujr al-Sa'di recorded it in "Ahadith Isma'il bin Ja'far" (403) from Isma'il bin Ja'far, and Ibn al-Maghazili in "Manaqib Ali" (351) via Anas bin Iyad al-Laythi, both from Sharik bin Abi Namir, from Ata' bin Yasar: that this verse was revealed in the house of Umm Salamah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although Ata' bin Yasar's hearing from Umm Salamah is established, his narration here shows that it is mursal and that he did not hear it from Umm Salamah.
Grading: Ahmad (44/ 26508) recorded it via Abu Layla al-Kindi from Umm Salamah, and its chain is sahih, Allah willing.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (44/ 26508) recorded it via Abd al-Malik bin Abi Sulayman, from Ata' bin Abi Rabah, from "someone who heard Umm Salamah". Its narrators are thiqah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This unnamed narrator is, as we most strongly think, her son "Umar bin Abi Salamah", the stepson of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Reference / Source: For al-Tirmidhi (3205 and 3787) recorded it via Yahya bin Ubayd al-Makki (as he is named in al-Tabari 22/ 8, al-Tabarani 8295 and al-Tahawi's "al-Mushkil" 771), from Ata' bin Abi Rabah, from Umar bin Abi Salamah: that this verse was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the house of Umm Salamah, and he mentioned the story. Umar bin Abi Salamah narrated it as mursal; he is a young Companion and his mursal report is a proof (hujjah), and most likely he heard it from his mother. This chain is good (jayyid), Allah willing.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (44/ 26508, 26550 and 26597) and al-Tirmidhi (3871) recorded it via several routes from Shahr bin Hawshab, from Umm Salamah. Al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan sahih".
Grading: We say: Shahr bin Hawshab is hasan in hadith in corroborating chains and supporting reports.
Note / Clarification: It will come at number (4756) via al-Hasan bin Mukram from Uthman bin Umar.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: See its supporting reports under the hadith of Ibn Abbas that will come in the author's work at (4702).
General principle: Imam al-Qurtubi says in "al-Jami' li-Ahkam al-Qur'an" (14/ 184): This was a supplication by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for them after the verse was revealed; he wished to include them in the verse in which the wives were addressed.
General principle: Al-Bayhaqi says in "al-I'tiqad" (p. 327), after mentioning the hadith of Umm Salamah: This confirms what we mentioned, that his family and his wives are included among his Ahl al-Bayt, and it is incumbent on us to love all of them and to be loyal to them in religion.
General principle: Among those who held the verse to include the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Ali, Fatimah, al-Hasan and al-Husayn are: Abu Ishaq al-Zajjaj in "Ma'ani al-Qur'an wa-I'rabuh" (4/ 226), with whom al-Wahidi agreed in "al-Tafsir al-Basit" (18/ 241); likewise Abu al-Muzaffar al-Sam'ani in his "Tafsir" (4/ 281), Abu Hayyan in "al-Bahr al-Muhit" (8/ 479), Ibn Taymiyyah in "Minhaj al-Sunnah" (4/ 23 and 7/ 74), Ibn Kathir in his "Tafsir" (6/ 411), and others.
Note / Clarification: Regarding his words "innaki ila khayr" (you are upon good), al-Sindi says in his marginal notes on the "Musnad": Its apparent meaning is that she was not included among them, whereas the apparent meaning of the Qur'an is that she is included; so it is possible that "being upon good" means that she is certainly included, as the context of the Qur'an shows.
