Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3576

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Since Allah Almighty sent down the Torah on the face of the earth, Allah has not destroyed any people, generation, nation or the inhabitants of any town with a punishment from the sky, except the town that was transformed into apes. Have you not seen this statement (of the Qur'an): 'And We certainly gave Musa the Book after We had destroyed the former generations, as insight for the people, and guidance and mercy, so that they may take heed' [Surah al-Qasas: 43]?"
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: It is sahih as "mawquf", and this chain is "hasan" on account of Muhammad bin Sa'd al-Awfi. He has been corroborated in narrating it as marfu' from Rawh.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Thus Ahmad bin al-Azhar corroborated him in al-Tha'labi's Tafsir (7/ 251), and Muhammad bin Marzuq in al-Wahidi's "al-Wasit" (3/ 400), both narrating from Rawh bin Ubadah with this chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And corroborating Rawh, "Abd al-A'la bin Abd al-A'la" also narrated it as marfu' in al-Bazzar (2248 - Kashf al-Astar). Abd al-A'la and Rawh are both "thiqah".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But a group of trustworthy narrators contradicted them: among them Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan (al-Bazzar 2247), Muhammad bin Ja'far Ghundar and Abd al-Wahhab bin Abd al-Majid al-Thaqafi (al-Tabari 20/ 80), and Hawdhah bin Khalifah (Ibn Abi Hatim 9/ 2981). All four of them narrated it from Awf bin Abi Jamilah, from Abu Nadrah al-Mundhir bin Malik, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, as "mawquf", his own statement. And this (its being mawquf) is the "preferred" (rajih) view.
