Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3559

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: "How will the people of Hell be gathered on their faces?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, the One who made them walk on their feet is able to make them walk on their faces."

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: The original hadith from Anas is "sahih", but this particular chain is "da'if jiddan" (very weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its defect (affliction) is "Abu Dawud al-Sabi'i", who is Nufay' bin al-Harith al-A'ma (the blind). Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared it defective on this basis in "Ithaf al-Maharah" (1886) and, objecting to al-Hakim's grading of it as sahih, said: "No, by Allah! Rather Abu Dawud is very weak."
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tabari (19/ 12) and Abu Ya'la (4278, 4279) through several routes from Yazid bin Harun, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (20/ 12708) recorded it from Abd Allah bin Numayr, from Isma'il bin Umar, from Nufay' (Abu Dawud al-Sabi'i), from Anas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the generation of those who narrate from Nufay' there is no one named "Isma'il bin Umar", unless this Isma'il is "Ibn Abi Khalid", about whose father's name there is disagreement, but no one has mentioned that his name was "Umar".

Grading: This hadith is established as "sahih" through the narration of Qatadah from Anas.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad (21/ 13392), al-Bukhari (4760, 6523), Muslim (2806), al-Nasa'i (11303) and Ibn Hibban (7323).
