It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "On the Day of Resurrection, before midday comes, these (the people of Paradise) and those (the people of Hell) will already have taken their qaylulah (midday rest)." Then he recited this verse: "Indeed, their place of midday rest will be the Blazing Fire" [Surah al-Saffat: 68].
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Note / Clarification: The printed edition has (إنَّ مَرجِعهم), in line with the standard recitation, but what we have established from our manuscripts is the reading of Abd Allah bin Mas'ud. Ibn Jurayj also attributed it to Ibn Mas'ud in al-Tabari's Tafsir (19/ 5). Al-Tabari (23/ 25) narrated from al-Suddi that the reading of Ibn Mas'ud has (إنَّ مُنقَلَبهم لإلى الجحيم), but what his son Abu Ubaydah and Ibn Jurayj transmitted is weightier. In any case, both of these readings are among the "shadh" (irregular) readings.
Grading: Its narrators are trustworthy (thiqah), but it has an "inqita'" (break in the chain). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Ubaydah (the son of Abd Allah bin Mas'ud) did not hear from his father. Note / Clarification: Abu Hatim al-Razi is Muhammad bin Idris, and Sufyan is Sufyan al-Thawri. Reference / Source: It was narrated from Sufyan al-Thawri by Abu Hudhayfah al-Nahdi in "al-Tafsir" (733), by Mu'ammal bin Isma'il in "Husayn al-Marwazi's additions to Zuhd Ibn al-Mubarak" (1313), and by al-Husayn bin Hafs in Ibn Abi Hatim's "Tafsir" (8/ 2680). All three of them mentioned in it verse (24) of Surat al-Furqan: ﴿أَصْحَابُ الْجَنَّةِ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَيْرٌ مُسْتَقَرًّا وَأَحْسَنُ مَقِيلًا﴾ (The companions of Paradise, that Day, are in a better abode and a finer resting place).
