Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3549

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) that the mosques have certain constant attendants (worshippers) who remain fixed there like its pillars (pegs). They have companions from among the angels: if they are ever absent from the mosque, the angels ask about them; if they fall ill, they visit them; and if they are in some need, they help them.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) and is mawquf (a Companion's own statement), but they did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But the "mahfuz" (preserved) narration is that of Sa'id bin al-Musayyib via his father (al-Musayyib) from Abd Allah bin Salam (as will come), even though Sa'id lived through roughly thirty years of Abd Allah bin Salam's life and was also from the same town as him.
Note / Clarification: Abu Hazim is Salamah bin Dinar al-A'raj.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (26920) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this chain.
Details of the narration: Sufyan bin Uyaynah narrated it in Ibn al-Mubarak's "al-Zuhd" in the transmission of Nu'aym bin Hammad (8), and Mubashshir bin Mukassir narrated it in al-Bayhaqi (2693); both of them from Abu Hazim, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, from his father, that Abd Allah bin Salam said to him: "O Musayyib" and he mentioned the full hadith.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ayyub bin Musa al-Umawi al-Makki differed, narrating it via Abu Hazim from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib as his "own statement" (maqtu').
Reference / Source: It was recorded through this route by Ibn Abi Shaybah (13/ 317), Mukram al-Bazzaz in "al-Fawa'id" (94) and al-Bayhaqi (2691).
Grading: This narration of Ayyub, despite his being trustworthy (thiqah), is "shadh", and the "mahfuz" narration is that of those who reported it as the statement of Abd Allah bin Salam.
