Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3542

It is narrated from the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that when this verse was revealed: "And let them draw their head-coverings over their bosoms" [Surah al-Nur: 31], the women of the Ansar took their waist-wrappers, tore them along the edges and made head-coverings out of them.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Nasa'i (11299) through Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak, from Ibrahim bin Nafi'. It will come at (7604) through Abu Nu'aym from Ibrahim bin Nafi', and by that route it is in al-Bukhari (4759).
Important point: al-Hakim's including it as a supplement (istidrak) is an oversight ("dhuhul") on his part.
Reference / Source: It was recorded in a similar form by Ahmad (42/ 25551) and Abu Dawud (4100) through Ibrahim bin Muhajir, from Safiyyah bint Shaybah. Al-Bukhari (4758) and Abu Dawud (4102) recorded it through al-Zuhri, from Urwah, from A'ishah, except that in it he mentioned "the Muhajir women" in place of the Ansar.
