It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning this saying of Allah Almighty, "And let them not display their adornment," that he said: (The forbidden adornment meant here is) anklets, ear-pendants, earrings and necklaces, which are not (to be displayed); "except what appears of it" [Surah al-Nur: 31], that is, except that which becomes apparent by itself, refers to clothing (that is, the outer sheet).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
