It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Hell (its fire) is black; neither its flames nor its embers give light. Then he recited this verse: "Every time they want to get out of it, from anguish, they will be returned to it" [Surah al-Hajj: 22].
The chain of narration of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is "da'if" because of being "munqati'" (broken). Abu Zabyan (Husayn bin Jundub) did not hear from Salman al-Farisi. Reference / Source: Ibn al-Mubarak, Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hannad, Ibn Abi al-Dunya and al-Bayhaqi narrated it from al-A'mash. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Bayhaqi (576) narrated it as "marfu'" via Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar, but Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar is not strong and is alone in raising it. Al-Bayhaqi said: "Its raising (to the Prophet) is weak." Reference / Source: Al-Tabari (17/ 135) narrated it via Ja'far bin Awn from al-A'mash, making it a "statement" of Abu Zabyan.
Note / Clarification: (2) It is like this in manuscript (Z); in the remaining manuscripts it is "sahih according to the condition of the two Shaykhs".
