Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3491

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was on one of his journeys, and his Companions had become spread apart in their pace of travel (that is, some ahead and some behind). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his voice with these two verses: "O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the Hour is a tremendous thing. On the Day you see it, every nursing mother will be distracted from the child she nurses, and every pregnant woman will deliver her burden, and you will see the people as if intoxicated, while they are not intoxicated; but the punishment of Allah is severe" [Surah al-Hajj: 1-2]. When his Companions heard this, they urged their mounts on and understood that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was about to say something important. Then, when they had gathered around him, he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you know what day that is?" They said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is the day when Adam (peace be upon him) will be called. His Lord will call him and say: 'O Adam, send forth the party of Hell.' He will say: 'O Lord, and what is the party of Hell?' Allah will say: 'From every thousand, 999 to Hell and 1 to Paradise.'" The narrator says: On hearing this, the Companions became so grief-stricken and silent that not even a smile could be seen on anyone. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw this state, he said: "Keep doing good deeds and rejoice. By the One in whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad, you are with two creations who, in whatever group they are included, turn it into a multitude: Gog and Magog (Ya'juj and Ma'juj), and with you also are those who have perished from the children of Adam and the offspring of Iblis." The narrator says: This removed the people's grief. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do good deeds and rejoice. By the One in whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad, you among mankind are only like a mark on the foreleg of an animal, or a mole on the side of a camel."
The chain of narration of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. Most of the Imams of Basrah hold that al-Hasan al-Basri heard from Imran bin Husayn; however, the two Shaykhs did not record it.
