أخبرني أبو الحسين محمد بن أحمد بن تَميم الحَنظَلي، حدثنا جعفر بن محمد بن شاكر، حدثنا عفَّان، حدثنا أبو عَوَانة. وأخبرنا أبو الحسين، حدثنا جعفر، حدثنا سعد بن عبد الحميد، حدثنا هُشَيم (3)، جميعًا عن أبي بِشْر، عن سعيد بن جُبير، عن ابن عبَّاس، قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "يَرحَمُ اللهُ موسى، ليس المعايِنُ كالمُخبَر، أخبره ربُّه أنَّ قومَه فُتِنوا بعده فلم يُلْقِ الألواحَ، فلما رآهم وعايَنَهم ألقى الألواح". وقال رسول الله ﷺ: "رَحِمَ اللهُ، موسى لو لم يَعجَلْ لقُصَّ من حديثه غيرُ الذي قُصَّ" (1).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both); he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah Almighty have mercy on Musa (peace be upon him). Seeing with one's own eyes is not like hearing news. His Lord informed him that his people had fallen into trial after he left them, and he did not throw down the Tablets (at that time); but when he saw them for himself, he threw down the Tablets (in the intensity of his emotion)." And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah Almighty have mercy on Musa (peace be upon him). Had he not been hasty, more events from his story would have been related."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

(3) تحرَّف في النسخ الخطية إلى: هشام. والصواب أنه هشيم، وقد سلف من طريقه عند المصنف برقم (3289).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) In the manuscripts the name is distorted into "Hisham"; the correct one is "Hushaym", and it has already passed via him with the author (al-Hakim) at no. (3289).
(1) إسناده صحيح، وسعد بن عبد الحميد - وإن كان في الرتبة دون الثقة - متابع. أبو بشر: هو جعفر بن أبي وحشية.
Grading: (1) Its chain is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although Sa'd bin 'Abd al-Hamid is below the rank of thiqah, he has been corroborated. Abu Bishr is Ja'far bin Abi Wahshiyyah.
وقد سلف الشطر الأول منه برقم (3289) من طريق سريج بن النعمان عن هشيم.
Note / Clarification: Its first part has already passed at no. (3289) via Surayj bin al-Nu'man, from Hushaym.
وأخرجه ابن حبان (6214) من طريق أبي داود - وهو سليمان بن داود الطيالسي - عن أبي عوانة وضاح اليشكري، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (6214) recorded it via Abu Dawud (Sulayman bin Dawud al-Tayalisi), from Abu 'Awanah Waddah al-Yashkuri, with this chain.
وأما الشطر الثاني فقد أخرجه بنحوه عبد الله بن أحمد في زياداته على "مسند أبيه" (35/ 21114)، والبخاري (122) و (3401)، ومسلم (2380) (170)، والترمذي (3149)، والنسائي (11245)، وابن حبان (6220) من طريق عمرو بن دينار، عن سعيد بن جبير، عن ابن عبَّاس، عن أُبي بن كعب في آخر الخبر الطويل في قصة موسى والخضر.
Reference / Source: As for the second part, 'Abdullah bin Ahmad in his additions to his father's "Musnad" (35/ 21114), al-Bukhari (122, 3401), Muslim (2380/ 170), al-Tirmidhi (3149), al-Nasa'i (11245) and Ibn Hibban (6220) recorded something similar via 'Amr bin Dinar, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, from Ubayy bin Ka'b, at the end of the long report about the story of Musa and al-Khadir (peace be upon them).
وسيأتي هذا الشطر بنحوه عند المصنف برقم (4139) من طريق أبي إسحاق عن سعيد بن جبير.
