Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3475

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) hastened to his Lord (at Mount Tur), al-Samiri set about gathering whatever he could of the ornaments of the Children of Israel, melted them down and made a calf out of them. Then he threw into its belly that handful of earth (which he had taken from the footprint of the angel), and all at once it became a calf that made a lowing sound. Then al-Samiri said to them: "This is your god and the god of Musa." At this, Sayyiduna Harun (peace be upon him) said to them: "O my people, did your Lord not make you a good promise?" Then, when Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) returned to the Children of Israel and saw that al-Samiri had led them astray, he seized his brother by the head, whereupon Harun (peace be upon him) said what he said. Then Musa (peace be upon him) asked al-Samiri: "What is your case?" Al-Samiri said: "I took a handful from the footprint of the messenger (Jibril, peace be upon him) and threw it (into the frame of the calf), and thus did my soul entice me." The narrator said: Then Musa (peace be upon him) went to the calf, filed it down with files into fragments on the bank of a river and let it be carried away. Whoever among the worshippers of that calf drank of that water, his face turned yellow like gold. They asked Musa (peace be upon him): "What is our repentance?" He said: "Kill one another." So they took up knives, and a man began to kill his father and his brother, not caring whom he was killing, until seventy thousand of them were killed. Then Allah Almighty revealed to Musa (peace be upon him): "Command them to hold back their hands, for I have forgiven those who were killed and accepted the repentance of those who remain."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In the manuscripts it is "شف" (without alif), which is an error; the standard form is with alif. "شَفَى كلِّ شيء" means: the edge of anything.

Grading: (2) This is a "mawquf" report whose chain is "qawi" (strong) because of Muhammad bin Sulayman bin al-Harith (al-Baghandi). The rest of its narrators are "thiqah" except 'Umarah bin 'Amr al-Saluli.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i is alone in narrating from 'Umarah; no one but the author (al-Hakim) named his father "'Amr", while others named him "'Abd" (as in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat" 8/ 347, al-'Ijli's "al-Thiqat" (1327), and likewise Ibn Hibban 5/ 244). Although 'Umarah is counted among the "majahil" (unknown narrators), he is corroborated here by Abu 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami ('Abdullah bin Habib), who is "thiqah thabt" (reliable and firm).
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim recorded it "in abridged form" in his "Tafsir" (1/ 176) from his father, from 'Abdullah bin Raja', from Isra'il, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Marwazi likewise recorded it in "Ta'zim Qadr al-Salah" (787) via Zakariyya bin Abi Za'idah, from Abu Ishaq, from Abu 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami alone, with it.
