Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3465

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that Allah Almighty will gather the people on the Day of Resurrection, then a caller will call out: "O people, are you not content with your Lord, who created you, provided for you and fashioned you, that He should hand over each one of you to whomever he used to follow in the world?" He said: Then (the forms of the false deities will be made to appear), until, for whoever used to worship Sayyiduna Uzayr (peace be upon him), the devil of Uzayr will be presented, and even the tree, the piece of wood and the stone will be given form for them, while the people of Islam will remain sitting on their knees. It will be said to them: "What is the matter with you, that you do not go off as the other people have gone?" They will answer: "Indeed, we have a Lord whom we have not yet seen (with our own eyes)." Then they will be asked: "If you see your Lord, by what sign will you recognise Him?" They will say: "Between us and Him there is a sign; when we see Him, we will recognise Him." It will be asked: "What is it?" They will say: "The uncovering of the Shin (Saq)." He said: At that moment the Shin will be uncovered, and those who used to prostrate (sincerely in the world) will fall down in prostration, while those people will remain behind whose backs will be like the horns of cattle (stiff and unbendable); they will want to prostrate but will not be able to. Then they will be commanded, so they will raise their heads, and they will be given their light according to their deeds. Some of them will be given light like a mountain in front of him, some even more than that, some will be given light like a date-palm on his right side, and some less than that, until the last of them will be the one who is given light on the big toe of his foot, which will sometimes shine and sometimes go out; when it shines he will step forward, and when it goes out he will stand still. He said: Then all of them will cross over the Sirat, and the Sirat is like the edge of a sword (sharp) and an extremely slippery place. It will be said to them: "Pass safely according to your light." So some of them will pass like a shooting star, some at the speed of the blink of an eye, some like the wind, some like a man running fast, and some will walk at an ordinary pace. In short, they will cross according to their deeds, until the one whose light is on his toe crosses. He said: (Because of the hardship) one of his hands will fall and one will hang on, one of his feet will fall and one will hang on, and the Fire will be touching his sides. He said: Then they will all be saved, and when they are saved they will say: "All praise is for Allah who saved us from you (O Fire) after He had shown you to us. Allah has certainly given us what He has not given anyone." Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) relates that whenever Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reached this point of this hadith, he would smile. A man said to him: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman, you have narrated this hadith many times, and every time you reach this point you laugh!" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) narrate it many times, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) too, whenever he reached this point, would laugh until his palate and his back molars became visible, because the person will say (in amazement and joy): '(O Allah,) are You mocking me, when You are the Lord of the worlds?' And Allah Almighty will say: 'No, but I am able to do that, so ask of Me.'"
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with these words.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) In the manuscripts it is "طبقًا" (in the accusative, with fathah), while the standard usage (al-jaddah) is what we have established from the source works, in the nominative (with dammah). "الطبق" means: the vertebrae of the back.

Note / Clarification: (1) That is: like the horns of cattle, hard and dry.

Note / Clarification: (2) Meaning: "when the big toe of his foot gives light, he moves it forward". In manuscript (S) it reads: "فإذا أضاء مشى" (when it gives light, he walks).

Note / Clarification: (3) "الدَّحض المزلَّة": a slippery place where feet slip and slide and do not stay firm.

Grading: (4) Its chain is "hasan" because of Abu Khalid al-Dalani.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Minhal bin 'Amr was declared thiqah by Ibn Ma'in and others, and al-Daraqutni said: "saduq". Although this hadith outwardly appears "mawquf" here, there is something at its end that indicates it is "marfu'". Abu 'Ubaydah is Ibn 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud.
Details of the narration: It will come in a similar, longer form at no. (8966) via Ahmad bin Abi Gharazah, from Malik bin Isma'il al-Nahdi, as "marfu'" from its beginning.
Reference / Source: Al-Marwazi in "Ta'zim Qadr al-Salah" (278), Ibn Khuzaymah in "al-Tawhid" (2/ 583-584), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (9763), and al-Daraqutni in "al-Ru'yah" (162) recorded something similar via several routes from Abu Ghassan Malik bin Isma'il, with this chain. With some of them it is lengthy, like the narration to come.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "Sifat al-Jannah" (31), 'Abdullah bin Ahmad in "al-Sunnah" (1203), al-Marwazi (280), al-Shashi in his "Musnad" (410), al-Tabarani (9763), al-Daraqutni (163), Ibn Mandah in "al-Iman" (844), and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Ba'th wa al-Nushur" (434) likewise recorded it via Zayd bin Abi Unaysah, from al-Minhal bin 'Amr, with it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Mandah did not cite its wording; he declared its chain sahih and then claimed that al-Nasa'i recorded it, which is an "error" (wahm) on his part. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar mentioned in "al-Nukat al-Ziraf" (9631) that he did not find it in al-Nasa'i, and al-Mizzi did not mention it in his "Tuhfat al-Ashraf".
Details of the narration: Al-A'mash narrated it (in al-Marwazi: 279, 281, and al-Daraqutni: 164) from al-Minhal bin 'Amr, from Abu 'Ubaydah and Qays bin al-Sakan, from Ibn Mas'ud, but did not make it marfu' and did not mention Masruq.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Via Abu 'Ubaydah it is "munqati'" (as he did not hear from his father), but via Qays bin al-Sakan it is "muttasil" (connected). A portion of it will come via Qays with the author (al-Hakim) at no. (3827), concerning those who are given their light according to their deeds.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is the narration of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, which will come at no. (8951).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) The word "بنوق" had dropped out of our manuscripts; we restored it from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis" and from al-Bayhaqi's "Shu'ab al-Iman" (352), where he narrated it from the author with the same chain and text, via his shaykh Abu 'Abdullah Muhammad bin Ya'qub.
