Abu Ubaydah bin Muhammad bin Ammar bin Yasir narrates from his father; he said: The idolaters seized Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) and did not let him go until he reviled the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and spoke well of their gods; then they released him. When he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What news do you bring?" He said: "Bad news, O Messenger of Allah! I was not released until I spoke ill of you and praised their gods." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "How do you find your heart?" He said: "At rest with faith." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If they do it again, then you too do it again."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it.

Grading: It is hasan, if Allah wills.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this chain there is softness (lin) because of "al-'Ala' bin Hilal", the father of Hilal, but he is corroborated. Although this report is mursal, it is the narrator's narration from his own household, and Muhammad bin 'Ammar bin Yasir is known for truthfulness, and his son Abu 'Ubaydah is saduq (truthful) and hasan in hadith, if Allah wills. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared its chain sahih in "al-Dirayah" (2/ 197), provided that Muhammad bin 'Ammar heard it from his father.
Note / Clarification: Abd al-Karim: he is Ibn Malik al-Jazari.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Sunan" (8/ 208), and via him Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (43/ 373), from Abu Abdullah al-Hakim, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" (3/ 230) from Abdullah bin Ja'far al-Raqqi, Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/ 140) via Hakim bin Sayf, and Ibn 'Asakir (43/ 373) via Yahya bin Yusuf; all three of them narrate it from 'Ubaydullah bin Amr al-Raqqi, in the same way.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Except that Abdullah bin Ja'far and Hakim bin Sayf made it a "mursal" narration of Abu 'Ubaydah bin Muhammad, dropping his father (Muhammad) from the chain.
Reference / Source: And likewise, from the narration of Abu 'Ubaydah, Abd al-Razzaq narrated it in his "Tafsir" (1/ 360), al-Tabari likewise (14/ 182), and Ibn 'Asakir (43/ 374), via Ma'mar, from Abd al-Karim.
