Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3403

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "Only a human being teaches him. The tongue of the one they refer to is foreign, and this is a clear Arabic tongue." [Surah al-Nahl: 103] He said: "The idolaters used to say that the slave of Ibn al-Hadrami teaches Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was a man with knowledge of the scriptures. So Allah Almighty said: 'The tongue of the one they refer to (as his teacher) is foreign, and this (Qur'an) is a clear Arabic tongue.' [Surah al-Nahl: 103] And He further said: 'It is only those who do not believe in the signs of Allah who fabricate falsehood.' [Surah al-Nahl: 105]"
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), and the two Shaykhs did not record it. And it has been narrated to us from Sufyan bin Uyaynah that he recited this verse and cited it as evidence against liars:

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: It is sahih as the saying of Mujahid.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The mention of Ibn Abbas here is an error (wahm), most likely from al-Hakim himself. For al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (135) from al-Hakim in his book "al-Tafsir" and made it the saying of Mujahid, without mentioning Ibn Abbas. It is the same in the printed "Tafsir Adam" (1/ 103). Al-Bayhaqi, after the report, drew attention to the narration of "al-Mustadrak" with the addition of Ibn Abbas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is criticism of Abd al-Rahman bin al-Hasan, the shaykh of the author (al-Hakim), but he is not alone in it. For al-Hasan bin Musa al-Ashyab and Abdullah bin Abi Ja'far al-Razi, with al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (14/ 179), both narrated it from Warqa' in the same way - without mentioning Ibn Abbas.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And likewise 'Isa bin Maymun and Shibl bin 'Abbad narrated it with him (al-Tabari) from Ibn Abi Najih.
