It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "Whatever verse We abrogate" [Surah al-Baqarah: 106], and the saying in Surah al-Nahl: "And when We substitute a verse in place of another verse" [Surah al-Nahl: 101], and the saying: "Then indeed your Lord, for those who emigrated after they had been put to trial" [Surah al-Nahl: 110]; he said: "This refers to Abdullah bin Sa'd (or someone else), who was governor of Egypt and used to write (the revelation) for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he slipped and joined the disbelievers, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that he be killed on the day of the Conquest of Makkah. But Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) sought protection for him from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) granted him protection."
