Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3389

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the believers escape from Hell, they will be held back at a bridge between Paradise and Hell. There they will take retribution from one another for the wrongs that occurred between them in the world, until, when they have been cleansed and purified, they will be given permission to enter Paradise. By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Each one of them will know his dwelling in Paradise better than any of you knows the way to his house in this world."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it! Because Ma'mar bin Rashid narrated it from Qatadah, from a man, from Abu Sa'id; but this is not a hidden defect ('illah), for Hisham al-Dastuwa'i knows the hadith of Qatadah better than others.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Note / Clarification: Abu al-Mutawakkil: he is 'Ali bin Dawud (also given as Du'ad) al-Naji.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (2440) and Ibn Hibban (7434) recorded it through the route of Ishaq bin Ibrahim (Ibn Rahwayh) with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Therefore al-Hakim's including it as a mustadrak is an oversight on his part.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (18/ 11548) recorded it in abridged form through the route of Ma'mar, from Qatadah, from Abu al-Mutawakkil. And it will come with the author (al-Hakim) at number (8921) through the route of Sa'id bin Abi 'Arubah from Qatadah.
Note / Clarification: His saying "When the believers are delivered" means: when they are saved from falling into the Fire after having crossed over the Sirat.
Note / Clarification: "Al-qantarah": the bridge.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): We have not found this narration of Ma'mar to which the author pointed, but 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated it from him in his "Tafsir" (2/ 221-222), and Muhammad bin Thawr in al-Tabari (26/ 44), with the unnamed man dropped; however, Ibn Thawr made it mawquf on Abu Sa'id.
Note / Clarification: Caution: in the al-Rushd edition of "Tafsir 'Abd al-Razzaq", "al-Kalbi" occurs in place of Qatadah, which is a mistake resulting from the eye slipping to the chain of the preceding report. It appears correctly in the Dar al-Kutub al-'Ilmiyyah edition.
