Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3388

It is narrated from Rib'i bin Hirash; he said: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when the son of Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) came and greeted Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) with salam. He welcomed him. He said: "O Commander of the Believers! You welcome me, when you killed my father and seized my wealth?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "As for your wealth, it has been set aside in the treasury (Bayt al-Mal); go in the morning and take your wealth. And as for your saying that I killed your father, I hope that I and your father will be among those about whom Allah Almighty has said: 'And We shall remove whatever rancour is in their breasts; brothers, on thrones facing one another.' [Surah al-Hijr: 47]" Upon hearing this, a man from the tribe of Hamdan said: "Allah is more just than that." At this, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) shouted at him with such a loud shout that the palace resounded with it, and he said: "Then who are they, if we are not those people?"
Its chain is sahih (authentic), and the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts it is "lahu"; what we have put in the text is from the printed edition and "al-Tabaqat", and it is the more apt reading.

Grading: Its chain is good (jayyid) because of Aban al-Bajali, who is saduq (truthful), and the rest of its narrators are thiqah.
Note / Clarification: Abu Nu'aym: he is al-Fadl bin Dukayn.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd recorded it in "al-Tabaqat" (3/ 205), and through his route Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (25/ 118), from al-Fadl bin Dukayn with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari recorded something similar in abridged form in his "Tafsir" (14/ 37), and Ibn 'Asakir (25/ 118), through the route of Waki', from Aban al-Bajali, in the same way.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Jabir bin Yazid bin Rifa'ah differed, narrating something similar in abridged form in al-Tabarani's "al-Awsat" (827) from Nu'aym bin Abi Hind, from al-Harith al-A'war al-Hamdani, who said: "I was with 'Ali..."; so he mentioned al-Harith in place of Rib'i. And Aban al-Bajali is better known as a narrator than Jabir.
Reference / Source: And something similar will come with the author (al-Hakim) at number (5713) through the route of Abu Habibah, the client (mawla) of Talhah, who said: "I entered upon 'Ali together with 'Umar bin Talhah."
