Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3386

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: An extremely beautiful woman used to pray behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Some people would move forward into the first row so that they would not see her, and some would stay back so as to be in the last row. Then when they bowed in ruku', they would look at her like this from under their armpits, holding their arms away from their sides. So Allah Almighty revealed this verse concerning them: "And indeed We know those of you who go forward, and indeed We know those who lag behind" [Surah al-Hijr: 24].
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. Amr bin Ali said that no one has criticised Nuh bin Qays al-Tahi with any proof. And this has a basis in the hadith of Sufyan al-Thawri.

Hadith Grading

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak) because of inconsistency (idtirab) in it and the disagreement over 'Amr bin Malik (al-Nukri) in it. Ibn al-Junayd transmitted in his "Su'alat" of Ibn Ma'in (754) that he declared 'Amr trustworthy, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat".
Important point: We say: he is alone in mentioning this story as the occasion of revelation of the verse, while the context of the verses before and after it refuses that it be the occasion of its revelation. Ibn Kathir said in his "Tafsir" (4/ 450): "A very strange (gharib) hadith, and it contains severe nakarah (objectionable content)." Then he preferred that it be the words of Abu al-Jawza' (Aws bin 'Abd Allah al-Raba'i).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (5/ 2783), Ibn Majah (1046), al-Tirmidhi (3122), al-Nasa'i (945 and 11209) and Ibn Hibban (401) recorded it through various routes from Nuh bin Qays with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tirmidhi said: "Ja'far bin Sulayman narrated this hadith from 'Amr bin Malik from Abu al-Jawza' in a similar way, without mentioning 'from Ibn 'Abbas' in it, and this seems more likely to be more authentic than the hadith of Nuh."
Important point: We say: the narration of Ja'far bin Sulayman to which al-Tirmidhi pointed was narrated from him by 'Abd al-Razzaq in his "Tafsir" (1/ 348), and through his route al-Tabari recorded it in "al-Tafsir" (14/ 26); but this narration of Ja'far is abridged, with the wording: "Those of you who go forward in the rows of prayer and those who stay behind."
Grading: Ja'far is saduq (truthful) and jayyid al-hadith (good in hadith), and he is in a better state than Nuh bin Qays. This narration of his (without mention of the story) is supported by the following narration of Sufyan.
General principle: The shaykh of the exegetes, Ibn Jarir al-Tabari, said after mentioning several opinions about the verse: "The most correct of the opinions on this in my view is the opinion of those who said that its meaning is: We know those of you who have died, O children of Adam, whose death has come earlier, and We know those who come later, whose death has been delayed, among those who are alive, and those of you who will come into being among those who have not yet come into being. This is indicated by the words before it, namely His saying: ﴿وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ نُحْيِي وَنُمِيتُ وَنَحْنُ الْوَارِثُونَ﴾ [And indeed it is We who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritors], and by what follows it, namely His saying: ﴿وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ … ﴾ [And indeed your Lord will gather them]."
