Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3381

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: A basket containing unripe dates was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "The parable of a good word is like a good tree" [Surah Ibrahim: 24], and then said: "It is the date palm."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: Verse (24) of the surah is: ﴿أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ ضَرَبَ اللَّهُ مَثَلًا كَلِمَةً طَيِّبَةً كَشَجَرَةٍ طَيِّبَةٍ أَصْلُهَا ثَابِتٌ وَفَرْعُهَا فِي السَّمَاءِ﴾ [Have you not seen how Allah sets forth a parable: a good word is like a good tree, whose root is firm and whose branches are in the sky].

Grading: It is sahih as "mawquf" on Anas bin Malik; the narrators of its chain are thiqah, but Hammad bin Salamah is alone in narrating it as "marfu'", and others differed from him and narrated it as mawquf, as will follow.
Reference / Source: As for the hadith of Hammad, al-Tirmidhi (3119), al-Nasa'i (11198) and Ibn Hibban (475) recorded it through various routes from Hammad bin Salamah with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hajjaj bin Minhal differed from the majority of Hammad's companions on its being marfu', for he narrated it from Hammad bin Salamah in al-Tabarani's "Tafsir" (13/ 205) as mawquf.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was also narrated as mawquf by Abu Bakr bin Shu'ayb bin al-Habhab (al-Tirmidhi 3119/ 1), Hammad bin Zayd (al-Tirmidhi 3119/ 2), Isma'il Ibn 'Ulayyah (al-Tabari 13/ 204-205) and Mahdi bin Maymun (al-Tabari 13/ 205); all four narrate it from Shu'ayb bin al-Habhab. Al-Tirmidhi said: "This is more authentic than the hadith of Hammad bin Salamah; more than one person narrated it like this as mawquf, and we do not know of anyone who made it marfu' other than Hammad bin Salamah; Ma'mar, Hammad bin Zayd and others narrated it and did not make it marfu'."
Important point: We say: Shu'bah likewise narrated it as "mawquf" from Mu'awiyah bin Qurrah from Anas.
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (7346 and 7347), al-Tabari (13/ 204) and al-Baghawi in "al-Ja'diyyat" (1107) recorded it.
Details of the narration: In the first place with al-Bazzar the wording is: "From Anas, I think he made it marfu'." But in the narration of the majority of Shu'bah's companions from him, the "mawquf" form is the "mahfuz" (preserved) one.
Note / Clarification: "Al-qina'": the platter (tabaq) on which food is eaten.
Note / Clarification: "Al-busr": the fruit of the date palm before it becomes ripe (rutab).
