Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3380

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with them both), regarding this saying of Allah Almighty: "Their greeting on the Day they meet Him will be: Peace" [Surah al-Ahzab: 44], that he said: "It will be the day they meet the Angel of Death. The soul of no believer is taken except that the Angel of Death greets him with salam."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is da'if because of the softness (lin) of Muhammad bin Malik, the client (mawla) of al-Bara', and he is alone in narrating it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Dhahabi faulted it in his "Talkhis" because of him and transmitted Ibn Hibban's statement that "he is not used as proof". He also faulted it because of 'Abd Allah bin Waqid and transmitted Ibn 'Adi's statement that he is "muzlim al-hadith" (obscure in hadith).
Important point: We say: this is what Ibn 'Adi said in "al-Kamil" (4/ 255), and he added: "I have not seen any statement of the early scholars about him that I could mention." Yet Ahmad bin Hanbal, Yahya bin Ma'in and others declared him trustworthy. So the defect is not in him but in Muhammad bin Malik, whom Ibn Hibban described as making many mistakes.
Reference / Source: Abu Ya'la recorded it in his "al-Musnad al-Kabir" (as in "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" 3684) from Ahmad al-Dawraqi, from Abu 'Abd al-Rahman 'Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Muqri', with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Busiri also attributed it to him in "Ithaf al-Khiyarah" (1973), then said: "The chain of this hadith revolves around Muhammad bin Malik, and he is da'if."
Note / Clarification: Caution: this report properly belonged in the tafsir of Surat al-Ahzab, since the verse mentioned is from it. As for verse number (23) of Surat Ibrahim, it is: ﴿وَتَحِيَّتُهُمْ فِيهَا سَلَامٌ﴾ [and their greeting therein will be: Peace].
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (13/ 367), al-Dinawari ("al-Mujalasah" 367), Ibn 'Adi ("al-Kamil" 4/ 255) and al-Tha'labi ("Tafsir" 8/ 52) recorded it through various routes from Abu Raja' 'Abd Allah bin Waqid in the same way.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): With Ibn 'Adi it is narrated from the hadith of al-Bara' from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as marfu', which is an error (wahm) by some of its narrators.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (399) through the route of Mihrajan al-'Abid, from Ibn al-Matruk, from Muhammad bin Malik, in the same way.
Grading: We have not found a biography for this Mihrajan.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari recorded it in his "Tafsir" (14/ 101) through the route of al-Ashyab Abu 'Ali (al-Hasan bin Musa) from Abu Raja' 'Abd Allah bin Waqid, except that in place of the verse of al-Ahzab he mentioned the saying of Allah the Exalted: ﴿سَلَامٌ قَوْلًا مِنْ رَبٍّ رَحِيمٍ﴾ [Peace, a word from a Merciful Lord], which is verse (58) of Surat Ya-Sin.
