Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3378

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: When Allah Almighty revealed this verse to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "O you who believe! Protect yourselves and your families from a Fire" [Surah al-Tahrim: 6], the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited it to his Companions one night (or during a day), and a young man fell down unconscious. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his blessed hand on his heart, and it was beating. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O young man! Say 'La ilaha illallah' (there is no god but Allah)." He said it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him the glad tidings of Paradise. The Companions said: "O Messenger of Allah! Is (this glad tiding) for him alone from among all of us?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Have you not heard this saying of Allah Almighty: 'That is for whoever fears standing before Me and fears My threat' [Surah Ibrahim: 14]?"
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading

Grading: It is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is no harm in the narrators of this chain, except that there is a disagreement over Muhammad bin Yazid bin Khunays in it. It was narrated from him as "mawsul" (connected), as is the case here with the author (al-Hakim), and through his route al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Shu'ab" (3338).
Details of the narration: And Qutaybah bin Sa'id (who is thiqah thabt, trustworthy and firm) narrated it from him (Muhammad bin Khunays) and made it a "mursal" hadith of 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Abi Rawwad, without mentioning 'Ikrimah or Ibn 'Abbas in it. This is how al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi recorded it in "Nawadir al-Usul" (195) from Qutaybah bin Sa'id.
Grading: Al-Hafiz Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali said in "al-Takhwif min al-Nar" (p. 30): "Perhaps the mursal version is more likely."
