أخبرنا أبو زكريا يحيى بن محمد العَنبَري، حدثنا محمد بن عبد السلام، حدثنا إسحاق بن إبراهيم، أخبرنا يزيد بن أبي حَكيم، حدثنا الحَكَم بن أَبان قال: سمعت عِكرمةَ يقول: قال ابن عبَّاس: إنَّ الله فَضَّلَ محمدًا ﷺ على أهل السماء وفَضَّله على أهل الأرض، قالوا: يا أبا عبَّاس، بما فضَّله الله على أهل السماء؟ قال: قال الله ﷿: ﴿وَمَنْ يَقُلْ مِنْهُمْ إِنِّي إِلَهٌ مِنْ دُونِهِ فَذَلِكَ نَجْزِيهِ جَهَنَّمَ كَذَلِكَ نَجْزِي الظَّالِمِينَ﴾ [الأنبياء: 29]، وقال لمحمد ﷺ: ﴿إِنَّا فَتَحْنَا لَكَ فَتْحًا مُبِينًا (1) لِيَغْفِرَ لَكَ اللَّهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِكَ وَمَا تَأَخَّرَ﴾ الآية، قالوا: فبما فضَّله الله على أهل الأرض؟ قال: إِنَّ الله ﷿ قال: ﴿وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ رَسُولٍ إِلَّا بِلِسَانِ قَوْمِهِ لِيُبَيِّنَ لَهُمْ﴾ الآية [إبراهيم: 4]، وقال لمحمد ﷺ: ﴿وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا كَافَّةً لِلنَّاسِ بَشِيرًا وَنَذِيرًا﴾ [سبأ: 28]، فأرسله إلى الجنِّ والإنس (1).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، فإنَّ الحكم بن أبان قد احتَجَّ به جماعةٌ من أئمة الإسلام، ولم يُخرِّجه الشيخان.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has favoured Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) above the inhabitants of the heavens and above the inhabitants of the earth." The people asked: "O Abu al-Abbas! By what has Allah favoured him (peace and blessings be upon him) above the inhabitants of the heavens?" He said: "Allah Almighty has said (about the inhabitants of the heavens): 'And whoever of them says: I am a god besides Him, We will recompense him with Hell; thus do We recompense the wrongdoers' [Surah al-Anbiya': 29]. And for Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) He said: 'Indeed, We have granted you a clear victory, so that Allah may forgive you your former and later shortcomings' [Surah al-Fath: 1-2]." The people asked: "Then by what has He favoured him above the inhabitants of the earth?" He said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty said (about the other messengers): 'And We did not send any messenger except in the language of his people, so that he might make things clear to them' [Surah Ibrahim: 4]. And for Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) He said: 'And We have not sent you except to all mankind as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner' [Surah Saba': 28]. So Allah sent him to all the jinn and mankind."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), because a group of the Imams of Islam have used al-Hakam bin Aban as evidence, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani (11610) recorded it through the route of Minjab bin al-Harith, from Yazid bin Abi Hakim, in the same way.
وأخرجه أبو يعلى (2705) مختصرًا من طريق إبراهيم بن يحيى - وهو العَدَني - والبيهقي في "شعب الإيمان" (149)، و"دلائل النبوة" 5/ 486 من طريق حفص بن عمر العدني، كلاهما عن الحكم بن أبان العدني، به. وإبراهيم وحفص كلاهما ضعيف، وحفص أشدّهما ضعفًا.
Reference / Source: Abu Ya'la (2705) recorded it in abridged form through the route of Ibrahim bin Yahya (al-'Adani), and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (149) and "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (5/ 486) through the route of Hafs bin 'Umar al-'Adani; both of them narrate it from al-Hakam bin Aban al-'Adani.
Grading: Ibrahim and Hafs are both da'if, and Hafs is the weaker of the two.
