It is narrated from Sayyiduna Buraydah al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that some people came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and began asking him (for wealth), saying: "Give to us," until this displeased him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then some other people came and said: "We have come to greet the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam, to gain understanding of the religion, and to ask about the beginning of this universe." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty existed (from eternity) and there was nothing other than Him. His Throne was upon the water, He wrote everything in the Record (the Preserved Tablet), then He created the seven heavens." The narrator said: Meanwhile a man came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Your she-camel has gone off." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) (left from there and afterwards) said: "I wished that I had let it be."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: This hadith is sahih, but as the hadith of 'Imran bin Husayn. Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is a disagreement over al-Mas'udi ('Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abd Allah bin 'Utbah) in it. Rawh bin 'Ubadah narrated it from him here with the author (al-Hakim) and with Ibn Khuzaymah in "al-Tawhid" (2/ 884); Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi and 'Uthman bin 'Umar bin Faris in al-Tahawi's "Mushkil al-Athar" (5631 and 5632); al-Nadr bin Shumayl in al-Tabari's "Tafsir" (4/ 12); and Yazid bin Harun in Abu al-Shaykh's "al-'Azamah" (208); and they made it the hadith of "Buraydah bin al-Husayb al-Aslami". But Khalid bin al-Harith differed from them in al-Nasa'i (11176) and made it the hadith of "Safwan bin Muhriz from Ibn Husayn" (that is, 'Imran bin al-Husayn), and this is the "mahfuz" (preserved) version. Technical note / Defect ('illah): And al-Mas'udi had become confused in his memory (ikhtilat). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Sufyan al-Thawri (Ahmad 33/ 19822, al-Bukhari 3190, al-Tirmidhi 3915, Ibn Hibban 7292) and al-A'mash (Ahmad 19876, al-Bukhari 3191, Ibn Hibban 6140) differed from him; both of them narrated it as "Jami' bin Shaddad from Safwan bin Muhriz from 'Imran bin Husayn", and with some of them it is abridged.
