أخبرنا الحسن بن يعقوب العَدْل، حدثنا محمد بن عبد الوهاب، أخبرنا جعفر بن عَوْن، أخبرنا إسماعيل بن أبي خالد، عن إبراهيم، عن الأسود، عن عبد الله في قول الله ﷿: ﴿وَيَعْلَمُ مُسْتَقَرَّهَا وَمُسْتَوْدَعَهَا﴾ [هود: 6]، قال: مُستقرُّها في الأرحام، ومُستودَعُها حيثُ تموت (1).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), regarding this saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "And He knows its place of settlement and its place of deposit" [Surah Hud: 6], that he said: Its place of settlement (mustaqarr) is in the womb, and its place of deposit (mustawda') is the place where it will die.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it.

(1) إسناده صحيح محمد بن عبد الوهاب: هو الفرَّاء النيسابوري، وإبراهيم: هو ابن يزيد النَّخَعي، والأسود: هو خاله الأسود بن يزيد النخعي.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Note / Clarification: Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Wahhab: he is al-Farra' al-Naysaburi; Ibrahim: he is Ibn Yazid al-Nakha'i; and al-Aswad: he is his maternal uncle, al-Aswad bin Yazid al-Nakha'i.
وتابع جعفر بن عون عليه أبو معاوية وهشيمٌ عند الطبري في "تفسيره" 7/ 287 إلّا أنهما أسقطا منه الأسود.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Abu Mu'awiyah and Hushaym corroborated Ja'far bin 'Awn on it in al-Tabari's "Tafsir" (7/ 287), except that both of them dropped al-Aswad from it.
ورواه سفيان بن عيينة عن إسماعيل بن أبي خالد بإسقاط الأسود أيضًا، وقال في لفظه: مستقرُّها في الدنيا ومستودعها في الآخرة. أخرجه عنه عبد الرزاق في "تفسيره" 1/ 215، ومن طريقه ابن أبي حاتم 6/ 2002 و 2003.
Details of the narration: And Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah narrated it from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid, also dropping al-Aswad, and his wording is: "Its place of settlement (mustaqarr) is in this world and its place of deposit (mustawda') is in the Hereafter."
Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Razzaq recorded it from him in his "Tafsir" (1/ 215), and through his route Ibn Abi Hatim (6/ 2002 and 2003).
وخالف عبدَ الرزاق في لفظه سعيدُ بن منصور فرواه في التفسير من "سننه" (895) عن سفيان ابن عيينة بلفظ: مستودعُها في الدنيا ومستقرُّها في الرحم.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sa'id bin Mansur differed from 'Abd al-Razzaq in its wording, and narrated it in the Tafsir section of his "Sunan" (895) from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah with the wording: "Its place of deposit (mustawda') is in this world and its place of settlement (mustaqarr) is in the womb."
والمحفوظ رواية جعفر بن عون ومن تابعه، وهكذا رواه إسرائيل عن السُّدي عن مرَّة بن شراحيل عن عبد الله بن مسعود عند الطبري، وإسناده حسن.
Important point: The "mahfuz" (preserved) narration is that of Ja'far bin 'Awn and those who corroborated him.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise Isra'il narrated it from al-Suddi, from Murrah bin Sharahil, from 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud, in al-Tabari, and its chain is hasan.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
