Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3327

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about "al-Sa'ihin" (those who travel), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are those who fast." [Surah al-Tawbah: 112]
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it. However, most of the students of Ibn Uyaynah narrated it as mursal and did not mention Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in its chain.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its isnad as marfu' and connected is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): About the author's (al-Hakim's) shaykh "Abu Ja'far al-Mudhakkir", the author himself said - as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar quoted from him in "Lisan al-Mizan" - that he narrates strange things. And about his shaykh "Junayd bin Hakim al-Daqqaq", al-Daraqutni said: He is not strong.
Important point: We say: The mahfuz (preserved) version is from Sufyan bin Uyaynah, from Amr, from Ubayd bin Umayr, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as mursal (without the Companion). This is how the majority of Sufyan's students narrated it from him, such as al-Shafi'i, Ali bin al-Madini, Yahya bin Ma'in and others.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by these routes by Yahya bin Ma'in in his "Hadith" (narration of al-Marwazi, 187), Musaddad in his "Musnad" (as in "al-Matalib al-Aliyah", 3621), al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (11/ 37), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan" (4/ 305) and "Ma'rifat al-Sunan wa al-Athar" (9056), and Abu al-Hasan al-Khila'i in "al-Khila'iyyat" (877). Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Matalib al-Aliyah": This is mursal with a sahih isnad. Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir said in his "Tafsir" (4/ 157): A good (jayyid) mursal.
Reference / Source: Ibn Wahb also narrated it as mursal, from Amr bin al-Harith, from Amr bin Dinar, from Ubayd bin Umayr; al-Tabari (11/ 37) recorded it by way of him. None of these mentioned Abu Hurayrah in it.
Important point: As for Abu Hurayrah, the correct position is that it was narrated from him as mawquf through a different route.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari (11/ 37) recorded it by way of Isra'il, from al-A'mash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: "Al-sa'ihun are those who fast." Its isnad is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Isra'il was contradicted by Hakim bin Khidham (al-Uqayli, "al-Du'afa'" 397; Ibn Adi, "al-Kamil" 2/ 220) and Abu Awanah (Ibn al-Muqri', "al-Mu'jam" 599; al-Daraqutni, "al-Ilal" 8/ 206); the two of them narrated it from al-A'mash with this isnad as marfu', which is not authentic. Hakim bin Khidham is matruk (abandoned), and the one narrating from Abu Awanah - "Abu Rabi'ah Zayd bin Awf" - is also matruk. Al-Daraqutni said: What is correct from al-A'mash is mawquf on Abu Hurayrah.
