It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that two men argued about the mosque whose foundation was laid on piety. One said: "It is the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)", while the other said: "It is the mosque of Quba." Then the two of them came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The mosque whose foundation was laid on piety is this mosque of mine."

Grading: The hadith is sahih, and this isnad is good (jayyid), as al-Dhahabi said in his "Talkhis". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Except that Mutarrif bin Abdullah (Ibn Mutarrif bin Sulayman bin Yasar) was contradicted in this hadith in narrating from Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Abi Yahya, nicknamed Sahbal. Abdullah bin Wahb narrated it in al-Tabari's "Tafsir" (11/ 28) and al-Tahawi's "Mushkil al-Athar" (4734), Abu Amir al-Aqadi also in al-Tahawi, and Qutaybah bin Sa'id in Abu Nu'aym's "Akhbar Asbahan" (2/ 46); all three of them from Sahbal, from his paternal uncle Unays bin Abi Yahya, from his father, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri. Important point: This is the mahfuz (preserved) version, except that al-Aqadi and Qutaybah made it mawquf. Perhaps the error in Mutarrif's narration comes from Umayr bin Mirdas, for Ibn Hibban mentioned in "al-Thiqat" (8/ 509) that he used to narrate unusual reports. Reference / Source: It preceded with the author at number (1811) from the hadith of Abd al-Aziz bin Muhammad al-Darawardi, from Unays bin Abi Yahya, from his father. See also the previous hadith. Note / Clarification: "Fa-tasawaqa" means: each of the two drove the other along.
